Quantifying the “avoided” biodiversity impacts associated with economic development

چکیده
Achieving global sustainability objectives such as the UN Sustainable Development Goals or Aichi Targets, including remaining within planetary boundaries, necessitates proactively avoiding a proportion of environmental impacts otherwise expected to result from economic development. Quantifying these “avoided” is important for monitoring progress toward meeting objectives, but doing so in consistent way fraught with difficulty. Using mitigation biodiversity by development projects an example, we explored challenges defining and measuring impact avoidance. Avoidance can be defined either action-based outcome-based, classified whether it achieved through project cancellation, spatial avoidance, design-based temporal We also examined what drives different types proponents implement avoidance measures. To support empirical quantification contribution that makes conservation goals, present framework structuring assessments Our has widespread applicability science, policy, practice, well relevance broader policies seek avoid social impacts.

Forestry impacts on the hidden fungal biodiversity associated with bryophytes.
Recent studies have revealed an unexpectedly high, cryptic diversity of fungi associated with boreal forest bryophytes. Forestry practices heavily influence the boreal forest and fundamentally transform the landscape. However, little is known about how bryophyte-associated fungal communities are affected by these large-scale habitat transformations. This study assesses to what degree bryophyte-...
متن کاملGlobal Economic Impacts Associated with Artificial Intelligence
Artificial intelligence (“AI”), a term first coined in 1956, is a branch of computer science that aims to create intelligent machines that work and react like humans.2 At the beginning of the study of AI, British mathematician Alan Turing proposed the true indication of computer intelligence to be when a question‐asker could not distinguish between answers from a human and those from a computer...
متن کاملUV impacts avoided by the Montreal Protocol.
Temporal and geographical variabilities in the future "world expected" UV environment are compared with the "world avoided", which would have occurred without the Montreal Protocol on Substances That Deplete the Ozone Layer and its subsequent amendments and adjustments. Based on calculations of clear-sky UV irradiances, the effects of the Montreal Protocol have been hugely beneficial to avoid t...
متن کاملQuantifying Regional Economic Impacts of CO2 Intensity Targets in China
To address rising energy use and CO2 emissions, China’s leadership has enacted energy and CO2 intensity targets under the Twelfth Five-Year Plan (2011–2015), which are defined at both the national and provincial levels. We develop a computable general equilibrium (CGE) model with global coverage that disaggregates China’s 30 provinces and includes energy system detail, and apply it to assess th...

World population has already exceeded 6.5 billion, out of which about 850 million (13 percent) are undernourished. With the current growth rate, the world community faces even a greater challenge of hunger and food security as the estimated the population will catch 9 billion by the year 2050 with doubled needs for food. At the same time, preservation of biodiversity, stopping deforestation and...
